General Information about Bali

General Information about Bali

Bali is an Indonesian island located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. It is one of the country’s 33 provinces with the provincial capital at Denpasar towards the south of the island.

With a population recorded as 3,891,000 in 2010,[2] the island is home to most of Indonesia’s small Hindu minority. In the 2000 census about 92.29% of Bali’s population adhered to Balinese Hinduism while most of the remainder follow Islam. It is also the largest tourist destination in the country and is renowned for its highly developed arts, including dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking, and music. Bali, despite being a tourist haven for decades, has seen a surge in tourist numbers in recent years.

The island of Bali lies 3.2 km (2 mi) east of Java, and is approximately 8 degrees south of the equator. Bali and Java are separated by Bali Strait. East to west, the island is approximately 153 km (95 mi) wide and spans approximately 112 km (69 mi) north to south; its land area is 5,632 km².

Bali’s central mountains include several peaks over 3,000 metres. The highest is Mount Agung (3,142 m), known as the “mother mountain” which is an active volcano. Mountains range from centre to the eastern side, with Mount Agung the easternmost peak. Bali’s volcanic nature has contributed to its exceptional fertility and its tall mountain ranges provide the high rainfall that supports the highly productive agriculture sector. South of the mountains is a broad steadily descending area where most of Bali’s large rice crop is grown. The northern side of the mountains slopes more steeply to the sea and is the main coffee producing area of the island, along with rice, vegetables and cattle. The longest river, Ayung River, flows approximately 75 km.

The island is surrounded by coral reefs. Beaches in the south tend to have white sand while those in the north and west have black sand. Bali has no major waterways, although the Ho River is navigable by small sampan boats. Black sand beaches between Pasut and Klatingdukuh are being developed for tourism, but apart from the seaside temple of Tanah Lot, they are not yet used for significant tourism.

The largest city is the provincial capital, Denpasar, near the southern coast. Its population is around 491,500(2002). Bali’s second-largest city is the old colonial capital, Singaraja, which is located on the north coast and is home to around 100,000 people. Other important cities include the beach resort, Kuta, which is practically part of Denpasar’s urban area; and Ubud, which is north of Denpasar, and is known as the island’s cultural centre.

Three small islands lie to the immediate south east and all are administratively part of the Klungkung regency of Bali: Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. These islands are separated from Bali by the Badung Strait.

To the east, the Lombok Strait separates Bali from Lombok and marks the biogeographical division between the fauna of the Indomalayan ecozone and the distinctly different fauna of Australasia. The transition is known as the Wallace Line, named after Alfred Russel Wallace, who first proposed a transition zone between these two major biomes. When sea levels dropped during the Pleistocene ice age, Bali was connected to Java and Sumatra and to the mainland of Asia and shared the Asian fauna, but the deep water of the Lombok Strait continued to keep Lombok and the Lesser Sunda archipelago isolated.

NGABEN CEREMONY IN BALI

Ngaben Ceremony in Bali

According to the Balinese Hindu belief, the human body is made up of 5 elements which are called Panca Maha Bhuta : pertiwi (soil, solid substance), Apah (water/liquid substance), Teja (fire/hot substance), bayu (wind) and akasa (space). The fifth element comes together to form the human physical body and then mobilized by the atma (spirit). When people die, it is the physical body who die, not the atma. Ngaben is the process of the purification of the atma, in respect to the ancestors. Ngaben Ceremony is also sometimes called pelebon ceremony a very important ceremony phase of the soul from earth to enter the heaven.

The good day to perform the ceremony usually made by Pedanda (Balinese Priest) after consulting with the family and observe the Balinese calendar. Preparation usually take days include several ceremony and prepare “Bade and Lembu” made of bamboo, wood, paper of various colors, where the corpse to be placed during the Ngaben ceremony. The family, relatives and the community will gather, the corpse will be cleaned or commonly called “Nyiramin” then dressed in Balinese traditional clothes. The whole family will put their respects and give prayer to the spirits in hope of reaching his good place in heaven.

The corpse that placed in “Bade” is carried to the cemetery, accompanied by a “gamelan”, “sacred ballad”, followed by all the family, relatives and friends. Arriving at the cemetery, the Ngaben ceremony performed by placing the corpse in “Lembu” which has been prepared before. Prayer lead by Ida Pedanda and “Lembu” is burned. Generally, the Cremation process may take one hour or longer. Ash then collected and later to be bring to the sea, because the sea is a symbol of the universe and is door to the way to God.

Extension of Kuta Car Free Day (CFD) is under review

Extension of Kuta Car Free Day (CFD) is under review

News review and collected by Ms. Eva Hermawaty, edited by I.J. Baim Ron

For several reasons, there are many places in Indonesia carrying out in a certain day of the week as Car Fee Day“. Bali have indeed put the some program, especially in Kuta and on particular spot of Jalan Legian, a one-kilometer long street of night bustling spot, launched  since Nov.27, 2010. Unlike in many other places whereas come to affect during day time, the Kuta Car Free Day (CFD) program started from 10PM until 5AM.

Bali Exotic Wedding have several requests from our clients to visit Jalan legian to continue their party after their wedding, spent the rest of the night to any of the night spot on Jalan Legian. The program was not a big issue for our clients, as having Jalan Legian been a free car and walking area at night indeed  have given different look and a more comfortable walking area, easy and colorful night area for visitor, without cars passing.

To accommodate the visitor’s vehicle during the time, some parking spots are available such as the Legian Morning Market area, Simpang Empat Legian, Trisakti Football area, and East of Elementary School No.3 Legian.  Exceptional are made for cars needed to transport the guest who wish to check-in at hotel or check-out from their hotel located on Jalan Legian (or other surrounding streets near-by with Jalan Legian is the only access), the Ambulance and Police cars.

Despite of the considerably success on this trial period,  currently the program is on halt and being reviewed on how to further improve better for the sake of everyone’s interest. The extension of the plan will be informed and put on affect again once the review made by the local authorities and related parties have concluded.

Legality aspect of a Registered Marriage in Bali

Legality aspect of a Registered Marriage in Bali

by I.J. Baim Ron

Bali Exotic Wedding have involved in many different situation of clients’ relates to the legality aspect of their marriage registration.  Several issues we encounter are :

1. Marriage of Two Non-Indonesian Nationals

2. Mix Marriage of Indonesians with person from other nationality

3. Indonesian Marriage with several issues of paper, legality, and belief difference

Please contact us for any of your particular issues, as nature of each person’s situation may differ subject to their nationality, partners conditions, etc.

The Indonesian Marriage Law defines marriage as a “both physical and mental bond between a man and woman as husband and wife with the purpose of building a harmonious family based on deity”.  From the definition one can also conclude that parties to a marriage in Indonesia can only be a man and a woman. It means that Indonesian law does not recognize homosexual marriages. Generally, Bali Exotic Wedding always refer to the following major regulation in regards to Legal Marriage in Indonesia:

1. Law No.1 of 1974 regarding Marriage Law; dated 2 January 1974, effective as of its enactment (“Marriage Law”).

2. Government Regulation No.9 of 1975 regarding the implementation on Law NO.1 of 1974; dated 1 April 1975, effective as of 1 October 1975

In accordance with Law No. 1 of 1974 concerning marriages in Indonesia (Article 2 (1): “a marriage is legitimate if it has been performed according to the laws of the respective religious beliefs of the parties concerned.” All couples who marry in Indonesia must declare a religion. Agnosticism and Atheism are not recognized. The Civil Registry Office can record marriages of persons of Islam, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian-Protestant and Christian-Catholic faiths. Marriage partners must have the same religion, otherwise one partner must make a written declaration of change of religion.

The Religious Marriage under Islam is performed by the Office of Religious Affairs (Kantor Urusan Agama) in a ceremony at a mosque, the home, a restaurant, or any other place chosen by the couple and is legal immediately after the ceremony.

A Christian, Hindu or Buddhist marriage is usually performed first in a church or temple ceremony. After the religious ceremony, every non-Islamic marriage must be recorded with the Civil Registry (Kantor Catatan Sipil). Without the registration by the Civil Registry these marriages are not legal. Recording by Civil Registry officials can be performed directly at the religious ceremony for an additional fee.

Persons of non-Islamic faith are required to file with the Civil Registry Office in the Regency where they are staying first a ‘Notice of Intention to Marry’ as well as a ‘Letter of No Impediment‘ obtained from their representatives (Embassy or Consular Office).

For the issue of the Letter of No Impediment to Marriage by the Representative Office required the need of both persons to be present with valid Passport of more than 6 months and Certified Divorce Decrees (absolute/final) and/or Death Certificates regarding the termination of all previous marriages.

Guests are required to contact their Representative Office for details well before the intended date of marriage. For the Notice of Intention to Marry, the couple have to submit the following documents for both partners to the Civil Registry Office (show the original and present a photocopy):

Certificate of the religious marriage; Passport for foreign citizens, or KTP (Identity card) for Indonesian citizens;

  • Certified birth certificate;
  • Certified divorce decree (absolute) or death certificates regarding the termination of all previous marriages;
  • 10 (ten) 4×6 cm photos, both partners side by side;
  • For Foreign citizens, ‘Letter of No Impediment to Marriage’ issued by their Representative (in Bali or Jakarta)
  • Copy ID or Passport of 2 Witnesses  (No parent may become witness in the Civil Wedding)

Additionally, it is the couples’ choice if they wish to have a Prenuptial Property Agreement (Surat Pernyataan Harta) which must be signed before a local Notary Public. This contract is necessary if the couple wish to hold property separately during the marriage. In the absence of such a document, Indonesian marriage law assumes joint ownership of property.

Islamic Marriage Certificates (Buku Nikah) issued by the Office of Religious Affairs (Kantor Urusan Agama) are legally valid in Indonesia and do not require registration with any other agency if they are going to live in Indonesia. However, if the couple might move somewhere else in the future, get a marriage certificate issued by the Civil Registry and an officially certified translation right away.

All other Marriage Certificates will be issued by the Civil Registry usually on the same or next day. A sworn English translation of the marriage certificate should be obtained for use abroad. It is not necessary for the marriage certificate or translation to be registered by their Countries Representative office. However, to have the sworn translation of the marriage certificate verified or a special translation made by the Representative Office of the couples’ country of residence might prove useful.

Again, please always contact us for more detail and properly handled, as every person may have conditions that are different from others.

Simple or Rich Content Wedding

Simple or Rich Content Wedding

By : I.J. Baim Ron

Wedding in Bali can always be unique, either simple or elaborate, putting the proper set-up at a proper place will be a major factor.  The Beach or The Garden, or even at the Chapel, either venue choose is just always turn great.

To define simple, mostly refers to the content of arrangement and number of people. A simple content surely will reflect a simple preparation process and possible shorter time on the site.  Small number of attendees tends to be sound simple as well, although it is not always true if the contents are rich, like cocktail, reception, with some entertainment. Rich content arrangement surely involve preparation works not only on the D-day work, but sometimes days before include the arrangement of Legal Paper with the consulate, hotel/accommodation, transportation from airport, even some pre-wedding sightseeing tours. Of all these, require the need of someone to take a full care,  normally your wedding planner or coordinator.

Typically, wedding in Bali is an outdoor, although some couples may have it in the chapel with still at least followed with outdoor cocktail or reception. Rich content have been dominantly come in a big outdoor wedding like in a Private Villa, whereas the couple and family or friends stay in the villa and the ceremony followed with reception held at the same place. Our experience on holding such wedding is always ‘timely properly set”, for allow each vendors preparation their service, namely Decorators, Catering, Sound System and Power/Electricity team, Band. An even tough as to set Tent, sometimes a day before should have been on place.

It does not matter how simple or rich the content are, the couple or family who assist the arrangement, or the outsource wedding planner or coordinator, will spend enormous time and attention in coordinating the vendors and go through the run-down.

The Coral Triangle is the heart of the world’s coral reef biodiversity, making Raja Ampat quite possibly the richest coral reef ecosystems in the world.   The area’s massive coral colonies along with relatively high sea surface temperatures, also suggest that its reefs may be relatively resistant to threats like coral bleaching and coral disease, which now jeopardize the survival of other coral ecosystems around the world. The Raja Ampat islands are remote and relatively undisturbed by humans.

The high marine diversity in Raja Ampat is strongly influenced by its position between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, as coral and fish larvae are more easily shared between the two oceans. Raja Ampat’s coral diversity, resilience, and role as a source for larval dispersal make it a global priority for marine protection.   1,309 fish species, 537 coral species (a remarkable 96% of all scleractinia recorded from Indonesia are likely to occur in these islands), and 699 mollusk species, the variety of marine life is staggering. Some areas boast enormous schools of fish and regular sightings of sharks, such as webbegongs.
