GALUNGAN & KUNINGAN HOLIDAY IN BALI

Galungan is a Balinese holiday that occurs every 210 days and lasts for 10 days. Kuningan is the last day of the holiday. Galungan means “When the Dharma is winning.” During this holiday the Balinese gods visit the Earth and leave on Kuningan.

Occurring once in every 210 days in the pawukon (Balinese cycle of days), Galungan marks the beginning of the most important recurring religious ceremony that is celebrated by all Balinese. During the Galungan period the deified ancestors of the family descend to their former homes. They must be suitably entertained and welcomed, and prayers and offerings must be made for them. Those families who have ancestors that have not yet been cremated, but are still buried in the village cemetery, must make offerings at the graves.

Although Galungan falls on a Wednesday, most Balinese will begin their Galungan ‘holiday’ the day before, where the family is seen to be busily preparing offerings and cooking for the next day. While the women of the household have been busy for days before creating beautifully woven ‘banten’ (offerings made from young coconut fronds), the men of our village usually wake up well before dawn to join with their neighbours to slaughter a pig unlucky enough to be chosen to help celebrate this occasion. Then the finely diced pork is mashed to a pulp with a grinding stone, and moulded onto sate sticks that have been already prepared by whittling small sticks of bamboo. Chickens may also be chosen from the collection of free-range chickens that roam around the house compound. Delicate combinations of various vegetables, herbs and spices are also prepared by the men to make up a selection of ‘lawar’ dishes. While much of this cooking is for use in the offerings to be made at the family temple, by mid-morning, once all the cooking is done, it is time for the first of a series of satisfying feasts from what has been prepared. While the women continue to be kept busy with the preparations of the many offerings to be made at the family temple on the day of Galungan, the men also have another job to do this day, once the cooking is finished. A long bamboo pole, or ‘penjor’, is made to decorate the entrance to the family compound. By late Tuesday afternoon all over Bali the visitor can see these decorative poles creating a very festive atmosphere in the street.

On Wednesday, the day of Galungan, one will find that most Balinese will try to return to their own ancestral home at some stage during the day, even if they work in another part of the island. This is a very special day for families, where offerings are made to God and to the family ancestors who have come back to rest at this time in their family temple. As well as the family temple, visits are made to the village temple with offerings as well, and to the homes of other families who may have helped the family in some way over the past six months.

The day after Galungan is a time for a holiday, visiting friends, maybe taking the opportunity to head for the mountains for a picnic. Everyone is still seen to be in their ‘Sunday best’ as they take to the streets to enjoy the festive spirit that Galungan brings to Bali

HAPPY VALENTINE

VALETINE DAY

(by I.J. Baim Ron)
to the women I love

One of the main theories on love states that it is made up of three primary components–intimacy, commitment, and passion–she notes. A lot of relationships, though, tend to contain just one or two elements, and couples should look at all three areas to find out if any need to be nurtured. Intimacy involves talking honestly and disclosing oneself to the other person, feeling close and connected, and listening to each other. “Basically, it’s communicating on an intimate level.” Commitment is making the decision that one is invested in the relationship and doing things that show it. “Passion is all those things that Valentine’s Day usually focuses on–the romance, infatuation, excitement, desire.”

Valentine’s Day is a wonderful reminder to express our love. Shall we say: everyday is Valentine’s Day,  we can always express and share our love, care, attention, and passion to our love. Love in many ways, can be express by giving hug, kiss or gifts. It is important to keep in mind that true love is unconditional. In other words, it is not, “If you loved me you would buy me an expensive present.”

Make Valentine’s Day everyday. The spirit of the celebration is expressing love and that is the most powerful gift. Tell your loved ones you love them in different ways.

CHINESE NEW YEAR 2011

It is believed that there will be lots of good and auspicious Qi showering the couple when they get married in the year of Rabbit. 2011 the year of the Rabbit marks an exciting and auspicious year for marriage and love affairs.  This 2011 Golden Rabbit year will bring about a lot of good and progressive news. For those who are still in love, this will be a great time to settle down for a sweet family. There will be lots of couples moving into their new houses and plan for their marriages

Chinese New Year, Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is often inaccurately called “Lunar New Year”, because—as part of the lunisolar Chinese calendar—the date is partially determined based on lunar phase. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first month (Chinese: 正月; pinyin: zhēng yuè) in the Chinese calendar and ends with Lantern Festival which is on the 15th day. Chinese New Year’s Eve, a day where Chinese families gather for their annual reunion dinner, is known as chú xī (除夕). It literally means “Year-pass Eve”.

Chinese New Year is the longest and most important festivity in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The origin of Chinese New Year is itself centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Ancient Chinese New Year is a reflection on how the people behaved and what they believed in the most.

Chinese New Year is celebrated in countries and territories with significant Chinese populations, such as Mainland China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, and also in Chinatowns elsewhere. Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbors, as well as cultures with whom the Chinese have had extensive interaction. These include Koreans (Seollal), Tibetans and Bhutanese (Losar), Mongolians (Tsagaan Sar), Vietnamese (Tết), and the Japanese before 1873 (Oshogatsu).

In countries such as Australia, Canada and the United States, although Chinese New Year is not an official holiday, many ethnic Chinese hold large celebrations and Australia Post, Canada Post, and the US Postal Service issue New Year’s themed stamps.

Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the Chinese new year vary widely. People will pour out their money to buy presents, decoration, material, food, and clothing. It is also the tradition that every family thoroughly cleans the house to sweep away any ill-fortune in hopes to make way for good incoming luck. Windows and doors will be decorated with red colour paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of “happiness”, “wealth”, and “longevity”. On the Eve of Chinese New Year, supper is a feast with families. Food will include such items as pigs, ducks, chicken and sweet delicacies. The family will end the night with firecrackers. Early the next morning, children will greet their parents by wishing them a healthy and happy new year, and receive money in red paper envelopes. The Chinese New Year tradition is a great way to reconcile; forgetting all grudges, and sincerely wish peace and happiness for everyone.

Although the Chinese calendar traditionally does not use continuously numbered years, outside China its years are often numbered from the reign of the Yellow Emperor, Huangdi. But at least three different years numbered 1 are now used by various scholars, making the year 2011 “Chinese Year” 4709, 4708, or 4648.[4] Feb.03, 2011  The Rabbit ( 兔 ) (also translated as Hare) is the fourth animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. The Year of the Rabbit is associated with the earthly branch symbol 卯. In the related Vietnamese zodiac, the cat takes the place of the rabbit. The Chinese symbol 卯 for the Rabbit sounds like (mão, mẫu, méo, mẹo, mẻo); the word “mèo” is cat in Vietnamese. Therefore, cat was translated from Chinese to Vietnamese as fourth zodiac sign instead of Rabbit.

Recounts the tragic and heroic epic legend of King Sri Jaya Pangus, his beloved Chinese wife, Kang Ching Wie, and his intertwining romance with Dewi Danu the Water Goddess of the volcanic Lake Batur.

This spectacular performance of ‘Bali Agung’ is inspired by the historic and legendary 12th century accounts of King Sri Jaya Pangus and his beloved wife Kang Ching Wie, the daughter of a Chinese merchant. Many years have passed but no sign of a child, the royal couple turn happiness into sadness so the King decides to leave his wife for a journey across the waters to find his taksu. Following the storm at the sea the King is washed ashore into strange and magical island with baby animals surrounded him. He finds his place for meditation not long until he is awaken with the rise of Dewi Danu, the water goddess of the volcanic lake Batur. Accompanied by her forest spirits, Dewi Danu seduces the King. Meanwhile after years of waiting, Kang Ching Wie put her courage to travel far to find her husband – sadly only to find her husband has married Dewi Danu and they have a child.

Kang Ching Wie in her disappointment sets her guards against Jaya Pangus. A raging battle ensues, but their strong love keeps them together to face the monster attack and the natural disasters.  In her equal anger, Dewi Danu in her spirit power turns The King and his Queen into statues.

The people in the village lost their beloved King and Queen but happy to greet their new young King. With the presence of Dewi Danu, the new Prince is crowned by the spirits of Jaya Pangus and Kang Ching Wie. The villagers are happy. The story ends with the origin of ‘Barong Landung’ that is presented as the living embodiment of their former King and Queen up to this day. Kang Ching Wie is one of the two supreme deities in Balinese tradition and is considered to be the Goddess of Prosperity. Her shrines are erected at every trading location and merchant’s home. Dewi Danu is the other supreme deity and is considered to be the symbol of fertility. Dewi Danu is also the goddess of lake Batur which is the source of the water that irrigates the island abundant farmland.

Barong Landung, effigies of the King and his wife, Kang Ching Wie are paraded only once in every 210 days through the streets of Bali as an ogre-like ‘Barong Landung’, warding off bad luck and evil spirits.
